How to get to Copenhagen from Billund Airport

Scandinavian countries are notoriously notorious for being cheap for a tourist, in fact they have the opposite reputation. If, therefore, we tried to save as much as possible to go and say goodbye to the little mermaid in Copenhagen , we probably chose to fly with a low-cost airline such as Ryanair, which does not land near the Danish capital, but on the runway of Billundairport (airport site), a town just under three hundred kilometres from the centre of Copenhagen.

Who knows better than us gypsies that low-cost travel is certainly not synonymous with comfort, and although in this case the distance seems really substantial, let's look at the solutions for reaching the capital without too many problems. As a preamble, let us say that Billund is not served by train. This should not frighten you because the efficient Danish transport network has numerous road connections. So from Billund airport there are two solutions to get to København H station in the centre of Copenhagen: the first is to take the bus to Vejle, about 30 kilometres away and from there take the train to the capital for just over 200km, a total of 3h to 3h 40′. The second alternative is to take a shuttle to cover the entire journey for a total time of about four hours.

The Danes have a nice site for planning travel, it is called www.rejseplanen.dk, a sort of public transport journey planner also in English, which finds solutions with buses and trains with timetables, costs, journey times, any changes to be made and buying the ticket online. In our case, starting from Billund airport, the site takes the bus to Vejle railway station using routes 43 and 143: using the first bus the total journey time is about 40′ shorter than the second.

As far as frequency is concerned, there is a departure approximately every forty minutes for a one-way cost of 349DKK, just over 45€, double that for round trip. Mind you, the last run to Copenhagen leaves at midnight.

If, on the other hand, you don't like trains and want to board the bus at Billund Airport and get off at Valby Station in Copenhagen, you can take the Sims Turistbiler shuttle service(www.sims-turistbiler.dk in Danish only!) called Fjernbus 444, with departures at 11.05am (except Wednesdays and Sundays) and 9pm (except Fridays and Saturdays). The one-way cost is 330DKK, about 44€ with a journey time of about four hours. Last thing, Copenhagen is spelled Københav in Danish, remember this when checking timetables and whatnot.
