The study, preservation and promotion of tangible cultural heritage in Bulgaria is executed by the Ministry of Culture http://mc.government.bg via the Museums, Galleries and Fine Arts Directorate, and the Ministry of Education and Science.
Since the adoption of the Act on Cultural Heritage, on 10.04.2009, the Ministry of Culture has exercised supreme guidance and supervision over the preservation of cultural heritage. According to this Act, whenever a project or activity is connected with the cultural heritage, the public and private authorities are obliged to finance restoration and preservation of the respective valuables.
The Act on Cultural Heritage defines the general framework for regulation of the ownership, registration, research, conservation, restoration, digitalization and management of cultural heritage in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria currently lacks a national strategy on protection and management of cultural heritage.
