1. Topic of the conference
The term 'place of memory' ('lieu de memoire') has been used in heritage protection with increased frequency. A 'place of memory' is a property or site vested with historical significance due to the nature of the historic events that occurred there. What differentiates places of memory from other categories of heritage is the relation between the material and non-material components of the site. In 'places of memory', the non-material component is of far greater importance than the material one.
In historical studies, the term 'place of memory' conveys several meanings, including metaphorical ones. In heritage protection, however, the meaning of this phrase narrows down to such sites as battlefields, places of birth or death of important persons, killing and captivity sites, disaster areas, and other sites of similar historical significance. These sites are characterised by the humble nature of material components -- or even absence of any material components at all -- compared to the immaterial value/significance attributed to these sites.
As the term 'place of memory' is still new in heritage protection and conservation, it needs to be developed in both its theoretical and practical aspects. It is therefore necessary to coin fundamental terms for the sites in question, formulate principles of conservation-related actions to be taken in these places, and popularise examples of protecting and interpreting 'places of memory'.
Forms of conservation actions and the rules governing them should depend on the values of the site, its material features of an asset, its non-material values, and the relationship between these components. These aspects are a part of the conservation theory.
With regards to conservation protection in places of memory, three different areas need to be discussed for theoretical and practical purposes:
- interpretation of places of memory/how to communicate the meaning of places of memory/relationship between the tangible and intangible components
- definition of the place of memory from the perspective of heritage protection /can places of memory fall under typological groups with common characteristics and features?
- forms of conservation protection in places of memory and the rules governing them/integrity and authenticity in protection of places of memory.
There are two scientific committees whose members deal with matters closely related to problems pertaining to the protection, conservation, and interpretation of places of memory - the International Scientific Committee on Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration and the International Scientific Committee on the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites. For this reason, this year's conference is jointly organised by these ICOMOS ISCs.
2. Purpose and scope of the conference
The International Scientific Committee for the Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration in collaboration with the the International Scientific Committee on the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites and the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco-Life Beyond Tourism is promoting the International conference entitled "Place of Memory - Protection, Conservation, Interpretation" (Florence, 8th - 10th March, 2017).
The aim of the conference is to discuss the current notion of place of memory, in particular the criteria and methodology of the selection of places of memory as well as the forms of their protection, conservation, management and interpretation.
According to the topic of the conference the presentations should lead to conclusions, which can be used to develop the theory and practice of interpretation, conservation and protection of places of memory.
The conference will be organized as three thematic sessions:
- Definition of the place of memory from the perspective of heritage protection/can places of memory be categorised in groups of characteristic features?
- Interpretation of places of memory/how to communicate the meaning of places of memory - relationship between the tangible and intangible components
- Forms of conservation protection in places of memory and the rules governing them/integrity and authenticity in protection of places of memory.
3. Paper submission
Proposals for papers should be sent the form of a 2-page summary (developed in the form of separate subsections or bullet points to facilitate understanding of the idea of the paper).
Proposals for papers must indicate to which of the three thematic sessions they refer.
Please send the paper proposals by December 20th, 2016 to the following addresses: email@example.com .
Scientific reviewers from both committees will select the papers to be presented at the conference and the conference materials will be published as a reviewed monograph.
Authors of papers will be notified of the reviewers' decisions by January 15th, 2017.
For additional information please send questions to: firstname.lastname@example.org
We encourage you to submit paper proposals and invite you to participate in the conference.
This meeting falls under the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Paris, 4th March 2013, by ICOMOS and the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco of Florence, which recognizes special conditions for organizing the annual meetings of all the ICOMOS ISCs in one of the Foundation's venues, in Florence. Besides, accomplishing with the 18th ICOMOS General Assembly Resolution n, 42/2014, the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco and the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration (Theophilo) are pleased to invite Observers to attend this international conference.
Renowned specialists and experts from all over the world will deliver reports at the conference. The participation of external Observers (young researchers and scholars in particular) is welcome and a special section of the program will be just dedicated to Q&A; this will provide an extraordinary opportunity for upgrading skill and knowledge in conservation and restoration and for extending professional and scientific contacts.
